It was around 1965 that Lima began manufacturing plastic-based toy trains imitating the French manufacturer Jouef: the aim was to produce H0 scale models offered at a competitive price. Very quickly the firm multiplied specific models for different European, American and even Australian networks.By 1970, the catalogue was much larger than Jouef's. The French fleet was fairly well represented: in particular, the RGP "Lézard vert" trainset was very well received by French enthusiasts despite a questionable engine.
At the same time, the company's production of the "Lézard vert" RGP was very well received.
In 1972, 0 and N scale productions were launched. In 0, the French fleet would be represented by a BB 67000. This production would soon be discontinued, while the N scale saw its catalogue expand in a manner comparable to that of the traditional H0 scale.
Until 1985, motorisation remained this brand's weak point. After 1985, LIMA switched to a central engine which, with a cardan shaft and gear descent would drive all the axles on each locomotive. This led to the launch of a number of models, including the Swiss SBB's RAe four-voltage trainset and the SNCF's stainless steel suburban trainset. LIMA was acquired by Hornby in 2004.
