A little history
Volkswagen and Deutsche Bundesbahn had an extremely innovative idea when, in 1959, they signed a contract for the rail transport of engines and transmission systems between the various Volkswagen production sites. The solution: standardised containers that can be transported on double units made up of converted Rm(r)so wagons connected by a short coupling. The wagons had only flat superstructures and wooden floors on which the container frames were mounted. Each double unit could accommodate six containers filled with either 36 engines or 96 transmission systems. By 1966, container wagons for transporting engines and transmission systems were running between Hanover and Wolfsburg, Emden and Ingolstadt, and later Brussels from Kassel-Baunatal. From 1970 onwards, the following destinations were added: Salzgitter, Neckarsulm, Stuttgart and Osnabrück (Karman).
