In order to transport the increasingly heavy trains through the Gotthard, the Board of Directors of Swiss Federal Railways decided to build standard double locomotives. In 1931, SBB put the Ae 8/14 11801 into service. Not only the technical concept of the Ae 8/14, but also the exterior design was mainly based on the Ae 4/7.The monster was able to transport 2,000 tonnes on the plains, towed 1,760 tonnes on steep 16-metre ramps and had a pulling power of 770 tonnes on 26-metre mountain ramps. The giant was almost 34 metres long and weighed a total of 247 tonnes.
In 1932, SBB acquired another Ae 8/14, numbered 11851, which was regarded as the successor to the 11801. Although the locomotive had the same weight and dimensions as the previous model, power output could be increased to 6070 kW (8250 bhp).Instead of the Buchli drive, however, 11851 installed the SLM universal drive, which had sixteen traction motors. The SLM drive did increase power output, but it was also extremely noisy, prone to breakdowns and not very cost-effective.
On conversion in 1961, the locomotive was fitted with new welded driver's cabs for seated operation similar to those on the new Ae 6/6 locomotives.11851 continued to operate in this partially modernised design until 1976,

Our current H0 model reflects the locomotive in this partially modernised look during its last 15 years of operation, equipped with many new features in the digital version.
