A touch of history:

The CC 6500s are an iconic series of SNCF mainline electric locomotives manufactured by the French company Alsthom, which became Alstom in 1998. Emerging as the most powerful and efficient single-current locomotives of their time from the 1970s onwards, the CC 6500s are the flagship of a vast family of locomotives, later nicknamed the "Nez cassés" (broken noses). These locomotives derived from the CC 40100 and CC 72000 models, sharing the same body frame with the latter.

Originally designed by Paul Arzens, the CC 6500s sported a distinctive metallic grey, Capitol red and orange livery, known as the "coup de soleil livery", in harmony with the Grand Confort coaches. Three sub-series were delivered to the SNCF between 3 August 1969 and 4 June 1975, with specific variants such as the "6500 Maurienne" series intended for the Maurienne line.

Notable for their construction features, the CC 6500s evolved with improvements, including the addition of head sleepers fitted after the 60th locomotive for the eventual European automatic coupling. Between 1995 and 1997, four CC 21000 locomotives were transformed into CC 6575 to 6578.

Technically, these C'C' locomotives (1 engine and 3 axles per bogie) introduced the self-ventilation system, similar to that used on railcars. Although this system saves weight, it has disadvantages when hauling heavy freight trains, requiring the addition of blower motor fans to prevent the electric motors from overheating.

The C'C' locomotives are also equipped with an electric fan system.
