The Deutsche Bundesbahn (DB) 78 series was a class of steam locomotives used by German railways. These locomotives were mainly used for freight transport on the main lines. The 78 series locomotives were built between 1923 and 1928 by various German railway construction companies, including Henschel & Sohn, Krauss-Maffei and Linke-Hofmann. A total of 625 locomotives of this series were produced. The 78 series locomotive was a single expansion steam locomotive, also known as a Prussian locomotive. It used coal as fuel and was equipped with a separate tender to transport the coal and water needed to produce steam. The 78 series locomotives were designed to produce around 1,300 horsepower.
