A little touch of history:
The Deutsche Reichsbahn converted 22 locomotives to coal dust heating (Wendler system) in the 1950s. The most notable changes were a tank and an additional air pump fitted to the left-hand end of the chassis, and the tender fitted with a coal bunker. The locomotives proved particularly efficient on the ramps of the Thuringian Forest, thanks to the precise regulation of their heating. With the introduction of EDP numbers, the coal dust locomotives were redesignated series 44.9.
