This series of locomotives was light and versatile, they replaced steam locomotives on electrified secondary lines. These engines were put into service to haul goods and passengers.
These models were in operation for over 30 years, and had to cease to be put into service, as goods became heavier and heavier, so it was difficult to haul them.
There were then two sub-series characterised by their appearance:
- BB 9401 to 9435: "low" roof, pantographs mounted on two wide risers.
- BB 9436 to 9535 : "high" roof, pantographs mounted on small blocks.
