The wagons are generally intended for the transport of animals or goods on more or less fast tracks.
Initially, freight wagons were divided intothree categories:
- the boxcar for weather protection, such as bad weather. They were used for all types of packaged or unpackaged goods as well as animal transport.
- the flat car with or without sideboards and stakes, used for all types of goods not afraid of bad weather (rails, vehicles, industrial products..)
- the tombereau wagon equipped with fixed walls that can be covered or not used for the transport of bulk materials (ballast, coal, ore, scrap metal..)
At the present time, there are dozens of different wagons specialized according to the type of goods transported.
