The wagons are generally intended for the transport of animals or goods on more or less fast tracks.
Initially, freight wagons were divided intothree categories:
- the box wagon for weather protection, such as inclement weather. They were used for all types of packaged or unpackaged goods, as well as for transporting animals.
- the flat wagon with or without sideboards and stakes, used for all types of goods not afraid of bad weather (rails, vehicles, industrial products..)
- the tombereau wagon fitted with fixed walls that could be tarpaulin-covered or not used for transporting bulk materials (ballast, coal, ore, scrap metal..)
Today, there are dozens of different wagons specialised according to the type of goods being transported.
