On 24 December 1818 (Christmas Eve), Franz Xaver Gruber (village organist and schoolteacher) and Joseph Mohr (presbyter of St. Nikolaus Church in Oberndorf near Salzbourd) performed the Christmas carol Silent Night for the 1st time. The church of St Nikolaus was then demolished and replaced by the Silent Night Memorial Chapel.
