The company Deutsche Reichsbahn was concerned that they would not be able to keep the class 01 locomotives for their expresses, due to their poor performance. So they modernised the 01 series, increasing its performance. The boiler superstructure was reinforced, the driver's cab was modernised and the smoke deflectors were upgraded. Some locomotives have also been fitted with new moulded steel Boxpok wheels. The Reko-01 locomotive was one of the most powerful express steam locomotives of the post-war era.
