UIC-I type railcars form a set of railcars suitable for transporting perishable goods that require protection from heat. This UIC type includes three different types of railcars:
- isothermal railcars, which protect goods from the outside temperature by reducing heat exchange;
cooler cars (or ice cars), which generate cold by means of ice packs and a ventilation device controlled either by wind turbines located on the roof of the car or electrically through a generator driven by an axle of the car.
- reefer cars, which have active refrigeration systems and operate like a refrigerator.
