Wagons are generally intended for transporting animals or goods on more or less fast tracks.
Initially, goods wagons were divided into three categories :
- the covered wagon for weather protection, such as inclement weather. They were used for all types of packaged or unpackaged goods as well as for transporting animals.
- the flat wagon with or without sideboards and stakes, used for all types of goods not afraid of bad weather (rails, vehicles, industrial products...)
- the tombereau wagon equipped with fixed walls that can be tarpaulin-covered or not used for transporting bulk materials (ballast, coal, ore, scrap metal..)
