Choosing the right model railway

What is a model train?

Model trains are reproductions of railway vehicles that have left their mark on the history of the railways. These reproductions can be static or set in motion thanks to sophisticated control systems, offering an interactive experience. You can control model trains and even create realistic sound effects using a DCC encoder in the locomotive. A miniature train set faithfully recreates the charm and ambience of the railways, but on a smaller scale. Every detail is carefully reproduced, from the locomotives and carriages to the surrounding landscapes and buildings. In an attic, a model railway show or a railway museum, the model train is a real invitation to relax and enjoy.

How are model trains made?

The manufacture of miniature train sets is a complex process that requires the use of cutting-edge techniques.Leading manufacturers such as Faller, Märklin, Piko and Fleischmann use 3D modelling software to create detailed plans of locomotives, carriages and accessories. This step enables the dimensions, shapes and details of the model to be defined. Once the virtual model has been finalised, it is used to create moulds. The moulds can be made from metal or silicone, depending on the material used for the miniature train. The moulds are then used to inject plastic or other materials into specialised machines that produce the various parts of the train. The moulded parts are assembled to form the main components of the model train, such as the locomotive body and carriages.Once the components have been assembled, the model train sets are dyed to reproduce the actual colour schemes of the trains. The model trains are then fitted with additional accessories to make the reproduction even more realistic. These can include transparent windows, small metal parts, headlights, taillights and other specific details. Manufacturers then integrate electrical components, such as motors, printed circuits, wires and plugs.

Why choose a model train in a boxed set?

You've got brass rails, a digital or analogue controller, and design features (tunnels, miniature cars, viaducts, signal boxes, engineering structures, etc.). All you need is a railway vehicle from the history of trains to have fun. Our model train sets are perfect for running a model train and having fun driving it. These kits contain a motor (a railcar, a locotractor, a electric or diesel locomotive, etc.) and towed vehicles (goods wagons, passenger coaches, etc.). This solution makes it possible to acquire a complete and original set of miniature trains, rather than putting together a convoy piece by piece, at the risk of ordering several passenger carriages with the same registration number several times.

3 légende miniature trains to collect

The history of the railways is rich in innovation. Here are three emblematic rames de train that have revolutionised mobility in France and abroad.

The TGV
The high-speed train (Tgv) remains a benchmark in the rail world. Operated by the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français (SNCF), it entered service in 1981. This self-propelled train is designed to reach high speeds on specially upgraded tracks. The most modern models can reach a maximum speed of 320 km/h in service. This considerably reduces journey times between the main French and European cities. The TGV network is extensive and stretches right across France, with main lines linking Paris with cities such as Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Strasbourg and Lille, as well as connections to other European countries, including Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Italy and Spain. TGV Atlantique, TGV Duplex, TGV Duplex, etc., there are various high-speed train liveries to collect. Check out our miniature train sets featuring the TGV in HO or N scale.

The TER

The TER, an acronym for Transport Express Régional, is a network of regional trains in France. It is managed by the Société nationale des chemins de fer franç ais (SNCF) and is an essential part of France's public transport system. The TER network covers the whole of France, with lines serving the regions and departments. There are more than 30 regions in France, and each region generally has its own TER network. The aim of the TER is to provide regional rail transport services, linking towns and villages within a single region. TER trains are generally made up of self-propelled electric or diesel trains adapted to short and medium distances. Some TERs are also equipped with double-deck wagons to increase passenger capacity. Check out our miniature train sets containing corail carriages.

The Shinkansen

The Shinkansen, also known as the bullet train, is a high-speed rail system in Japan. The Shinkansen was first introduced in Japan in 1964, linking Tokyo and Osaka for the Tokyo Olympics. Since then, it has become a symbol of Japanese technological progress and a popular mode of transport for journeys across the country. Shinkansen trains generally reach maximum speeds of 240-320 km/h, depending on the line and train model. They are designed to offer a smooth and comfortable travel experience, with reduced vibration and noise levels. The Shinkansen network runs on several lines across Japan, linking the country's major cities and regions. Some of the most famous lines include the T?kaid? Shinkansen (linking Tokyo and Osaka), the T?hoku Shinkansen (linking Tokyo and the T?hoku region) and the Ky?sh? Shinkansen (linking the Ky?sh? region). The Shinkansen is operated by the Japan Railways Group (JR Group), which is divided into several regional companies, such as JR East, JR Central and JR West. Check out our model trains featuring the Shinkansen train on the HO scale.
